MGX consortium closes $40 billion Aligned Data Centers acquisition

The Abu Dhabi-backed investment vehicle has moved from target-setting to ownership in one of the largest private digital infrastructure transactions to date.

MGX, the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership and BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners have completed the acquisition of 100 per cent of Aligned Data Centers from infrastructure funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management and co-investors, valuing the company at about $40 billion.

Aligned spans 51 campuses and more than 6.4 gigawatts of operational and planned capacity across major digital gateway regions in the United States and Latin America. The consortium said the transaction is AIP's first investment and an important step toward its initial target of mobilising and deploying $30 billion in equity capital, with the potential to support up to $100 billion of total investment including debt.

The partners also committed an additional $5 billion of growth capital to expand Aligned's AI-ready capacity. The deal gives MGX exposure to a platform built around data centre scale, power density and cooling technologies as demand for advanced compute infrastructure accelerates.
