Dubai Opens a Four-Week Trial of Driverless AI Pods at Bluewaters

The emirate is testing whether a network of small autonomous vehicles on dedicated guideways can close the first and last mile of a public transport system built for a much larger population.

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has launched a four-week trial of the Dubai Glydways automated transit system at Bluewaters, using autonomous electric vehicles supported by artificial intelligence and running on dedicated guideways rather than in general traffic. Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the authority, took a five-minute journey along the designated route to open the trial, after a technical briefing from Glydways founder Mark Seeger and the company's co-chief executive Blake Barber.

Each vehicle carries between four and six passengers and travels at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour with a range of up to 250 kilometres on a single charge. The pods use 20 high-resolution LiDAR sensors together with radar, high-definition cameras and autonomous driving systems, and are designed for round-the-clock, on-demand journeys directly between departure and arrival points.

The pilot is being delivered through a public-private partnership, with Bluewaters, a Dubai Retail destination under Dubai Holding, providing the field-testing environment, the infrastructure and operational support. The authority said it will assess vehicle and system performance, the readiness of autonomous driving, sensing, communication and control systems, safety and reliability, and passenger experience, and will use the resulting data to weigh future expansion. Planned corridors under study include a 2.8 kilometre link between National Paints Metro Station and Bluewaters, alongside proposed routes serving Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City, Business Bay and Mohammed Bin Rashid City. Fares, public access to the trial and a commercial launch date were not announced.

UAE and Japan Agree to Turn AI Cooperation Into Factory Pilots

The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology has concluded a working visit to Japan aimed at deepening cooperation in industry, technology and artificial intelligence, with meetings held in Tokyo and Kyoto. The delegation was led by Hasan Jasem Al Nowais, the ministry's undersecretary, who took part in the UAE-Japan Technology and Artificial Intelligence Roundtable in Tokyo and the 23rd Science and Technology in Society Forum Ministerial Roundtable in Kyoto.

Discussions in Tokyo centred on industrial partnerships and the faster adoption of advanced technology, with cooperation sought in artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, digital manufacturing and precision manufacturing to lift productivity, quality and sustainability. In Kyoto the emphasis fell on linking academic research with industry. Al Nowais said the priority was to establish direct partnerships between technology providers and UAE manufacturers to develop pilot projects, including AI-powered quality inspection and predictive maintenance, and pointed to Factory Forward UAE as the platform that connects technology suppliers with the industrial sector. Japanese companies, investors and industrial leaders were invited to take part in Make it in the Emirates, scheduled for Abu Dhabi from 3 to 6 May 2027.

Sixteen Emirati AI Experts Begin a Study Visit to Beijing and Shanghai

A delegation of 16 Emirati artificial intelligence experts from the National Experts Programme's Artificial Intelligence Track begins a five-day study visit to Beijing and Shanghai on 12 October, held under the theme of AI governance, smart nation systems and digital government. The programme said the visit will examine how China translates advanced research into entrepreneurship, commercial applications and deployment at scale, and how AI policy and digital systems can support national priorities and the delivery of public services.

In the two cities the delegation will meet Zhipu.ai, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, ByteDance, the robotics company AgiBot and Agentrix, which develops an enterprise AI operating system. The China visit is one of three international study visits within the track, alongside Canada and Silicon Valley, and the participants will be joined by six programme alumni and fellows. The track forms part of an eight-month learning journey that brings together 32 Emirati experts from government, industry and academia.

UAE Civil Defence Rebuilds Fire Response Around Agentic AI

The Federal Authority for Ambulance and Civil Defence is rebuilding parts of its operations around agentic artificial intelligence, its director general said, as the service shifts from reacting to fires towards anticipating them. Major General Dr Jassim Mohammed Al Marzooqi said the authority is transforming its operations to use agentic AI so that protection and response improve, and that once the technology is given the relevant data it can map hotspots, so teams know which areas carry the greatest risk and can be ready before an incident occurs.

Speaking around a specialised forum in Dubai attended by Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of Health and Prevention and chairman of the authority, Al Marzooqi said every civil defence directorate in the country will have an AI ambassador charged with finding, testing and sharing the best uses of agentic AI. The authority is working on Kashif, a drone developed with Dubai Civil Defence and Dubai AI Campus that enters a burning building before firefighters, builds a three-dimensional map of the interior and relays conditions to headquarters; Najda, a wrist-worn device that monitors firefighters for heat stress and cardiac emergencies; and Athar, a search-and-rescue system with self-forming communications for the first 72 hours after a collapse. The official said the tools will go through further evaluation and a pilot before deployment, with teams working alongside universities and private companies.

Digital Commerce

Dubai CommerCity Signs an Agentic AI Pact With a Global Commerce Body

Dubai CommerCity, the free zone for digital commerce that sits within the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Global Commerce Foundation to explore agentic artificial intelligence in digital and cross-border trade. The agreement was signed at the free zone's headquarters on the sidelines of the Ai Everything Abu Dhabi 2026 summit.

Amna Lootah, director general of Dubai CommerCity, said agentic AI marks a shift from using artificial intelligence as a supporting tool to deploying it to execute tasks and processes with greater autonomy, and that the partnership is intended to turn that capability into practical applications. The two organisations said their cooperation will cover applied research, proof-of-concept projects, technology demonstrations, market studies, executive education, mentorship, incubation programmes and business accelerators, with attention to opening markets in Dubai, Latin America and the Caribbean. The Global Commerce Foundation also said its Tetrix Agentic World League will hold a global finale in Dubai in 2027 during Dubai AI Week.
